A festival I like most

 The festival I like most is the Sinhala and Tamil New Year. It is a major cultural festival in Sri Lanka. It usually held on the 13th and 14th of April every year.


Long before the festival starts, people begin cleaning and painting their houses. My mother prepares delicious traditional sweets like Kevum, Kokis, and Aluwa. We also buy new clothes to wear during the "Nekath time".


There are many beautiful traditions followed during this time. Some of them are:

  • Lighting the Hearth

  • The First Meal

  • Anointing Oil

  • Worshipping Elders

I love this festival because it brings the whole family together. We play traditional games like swinging (Onchillu) and tugging the rope. There is a lot of joy, laughter, and music everywhere. It is a time for forgiveness and starting fresh.
